PFLAG National’s Story

Jeanne Manford was a trailblazing woman and mother who, after her gay son was beaten, first published a letter in a New York City newspaper declaring her love for him, then marched alongside him in the 1972 Christopher Street Liberation Day march—an early precursor to New York Pride. At the time, without the PFLAG community or organization rallying behind her, she proudly held the sign reading “Parents of Gays: Unite in Support for our Children.” It took bravery. It started a movement. And it launched a worldwide community.
