PFLAG National Mourns the Passing of Rep. John Lewis

July 17, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC—Tonight, PFLAGers everywhere mourn the death of Congressman John Lewis (GA-5). Rep. Lewis was an icon of the civil rights movement, who served Georgia’s 5th District since 1986, and was often referred to as the “conscience” of the United States Congress, Rep. Lewis was one of the “Big Six” group leaders who organized the 1963 March on Washington, taking a lead role in fighting for the end of segregation.

Brian K. Bond, Executive Director of PFLAG National, said:

“Our hearts are broken tonight, learning of the passing of Congressman John Lewis. Congressman Lewis challenged us all to get into ‘good trouble’—to use our voices, our privilege, and our courage to change the world. And he didn’t just challenge us: He embodied the model for how to do it, with a fierce but compassionate power. His strength was in his persistence and constant need to fight for those around him, fundamentally knowing that no one will be free until we all are free.

There is a reason PFLAG National honored Congressman Lewis as the first recipient of our Champion of Justice award because truly, justice had no greater champion. His voice is needed now more than ever—and his loss will be felt profoundly by his PFLAG family. But we will honor Congressman Lewis’ memory and legacy by continuing to use good trouble as a path to justice and equality for all.

Rest in power, Congressman Lewis, on behalf of PFLAG families across the country, who are forever indebted to you.”
