PFLAG National on the Masterpiece Cakeshop Decision
June 4, 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C.—PFLAG National—the nation’s first and largest organization uniting families and allies with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people —responded today to the decision from the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case.
Dale Bernstein, Vice President of the PFLAG National Board of Directors, said, “The Supreme Court today issued a very narrow decision in favor of one baker in one shop in one case in one state, but still reaffirmed that businesses in our country open to one must be open to all, including LGBTQ people. As the mother of a gay son, the mother-in-law of his husband, and the grandmother of their child, I still believe that the Supreme Court will uphold their rights in future cases as they have in some past cases, including Windsor and Obergefell. As a human resources business leader, I continue to firmly believe—and have proof—that discrimination against any part of the population is bad business. And as a leader on the board of PFLAG National, I speak on behalf of PFLAGers everywhere who will continue to fight for the rights of all marginalized people to live their lives fairly, safely, and free from discrimination.”
