“PFLAG VIRTUAL MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH” CELEBRATES MOTHERLY LOVE, LIVE ONLINE ON SUNDAY, 5/10

May 6, 2020

WASHINGTON — On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, PFLAG National will air a celebration of motherly love, the “PFLAG Virtual Mother’s Day Brunch” featuring Belinda Carlisle and James Duke Mason, Alaska, Alec Mapa, Ally Sheedy, Bright Light Bright Light, the “Boss Baby” JP Karliak, Rachel Mason and Karen Mason of the hit documentary CIRCUS OF BOOKS, Malia Civetz, PFLAG families, and more. PLUS: Enjoy a performance by OneUp Duo (NBC’s “The Voice”), previewing their brand-new song, written just for the moms!  **NEWLY ADDED** A special performance by INDIGO GIRLS! The event is supported by PFLAG friend and ally, Straight for Equality award winner Kristin Chenoweth.

This free, online special event begins at 2:00 pm ET / 11:00 am PT and streams online at pflagchapters.wpenginepowered.com/mothersday to raise awareness and funds for PFLAG National, the first and largest organization for the parents, families, and allies of the LGBTQ+ community, with chapters in 400 small towns and big cities nationwide.

“PFLAG is built on a foundation of motherly love for our LGBTQ+ kids, which is why we are so excited to share the PFLAG Virtual Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday. It feels especially important to show our love right now with a virtual PFLAG hug, when it’s hard to be close this Mother’s Day,” said Kathy Godwin, president of the board of PFLAG National.

Kristin Chenowith mother's day quote“To all mothers out there, especially the moms to our LGBTQ kids, we love you!! Thank you for opening your hearts to your kids,” said Kristin Chenoweth.

“Being as gay-friendly as I am, having a child come out to you can still be jarring. It still took my breath away,” said Belinda Carlisle. “I’m so happy to be a part of this. PFLAG has really helped our family a lot.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, closing community centers, schools, and meeting spaces across the country, PFLAG National assumed the herculean task of transitioning its affirming programming and support structure entirely online, all in 5 days, creating the PFLAG Connects program. “We did that because in a time of crisis, vulnerable LGBTQ+ people rely on their local PFLAG to support them and their families,” said Brian K. Bond, executive director of PFLAG National.

Bond went on to say, “PFLAG Connects helps make sure those famous ‘PFLAG hugs’ from mom are still there, even if we can’t be in person.” Funded in part by the David Bohnett Foundation, PFLAG Connects provides local chapters with online meeting tools, educational resources and trainings, and live events.

Philip D’Amour and Michelle Robinson are the executive producers of this special online event, Sophia Bonhomme is coordinating producer, with graphics by Five by Five Global. The “PFLAG Virtual Mother’s Day Brunch” airs at pflagchapters.wpenginepowered.com/mothersday—simultaneously on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube—starting at 2:00 pm ET / 11:00 am PT.
