Respect for Marriage Act Goes to the President’s Desk

December 8, 2022

WASHINGTON—Today, the Respect for Marriage Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support, following a bipartisan affirming vote in the Senate. Brian K. Bond, Executive Director of PFLAG National said the following:

“The Respect for Marriage Act is about love, it’s about families, and it’s about doing the right thing. When President Biden gets the Respect for Marriage Act on his desk and signs it, LGBTQ+ people and all people who are in interracial relationships know that their freedom to ‘I do’ is protected even if the Supreme Court someday overturns established precedent.

“The more than 1,100 rights the RMA protects for all married couples is more progress toward ensuring that LGBTQ+ people and their families are protected in every aspect of life. Given the threats of harm and concerted efforts to undermine support and care for transgender people in particular, PFLAG remains committed to advancing legislation that ensures that every LGBTQ+ person is safe, with their rights respected, and their lives and families valued and affirmed.”
